...the day was cloudless, a glorious morning. My first thought was 'Christ is Risen'.... There had been a frost and the air was rimy with a heavy thick white dew on hedge, bank and turf, but the morning was not cold...So I thought I would go and gather some primroses this morning and flower the grave for them. I strolled down the lane till I came in sight of the full mill pond shining between the willow trunks like a lake of in¬definite size. Here and there the banks and road sides were spangled with primroses and they shone like stars among the little brakes and bramble thickets overhanging the brook. A sheep and lamb having broken bounds were wandering about the lane by themselves and kept on fording and refording the brook where it crosses the road to get out of my way. The mill was silent except for the plash of the water from 'the dark round of the dripping wheel'. The mill pond was full, but I forgot to look at the sun in it to see if he was dancing as he is said to do on Easter morning. There was a heavy white dew with a touch of hoar frost on the meadows, and as I leaned over the wicket gate by the mill pond looking to see if there were any primroses in the banks but not liking to venture into the dripping grass suddenly I heard the cuckoo for the first time this year. He was near Peter's Pool and he called three times quickly one after another. It is very well to hear the cuckoo for the first time on Easter Sunday morning.

SEASONABLE ARRIVALS.—The nightingale made its appearance on the 28th March [!!!] near Abernant House, Llanvabon, and is heard nightly by some scores of admiring listeners. The cuckoo also was seen and heard in the same neighbourhood on the 7th March, which was some days earlier than any other place in the district.

THE CUCKOO AND THE GOOSEBERRY CATERPILLAR.—About three weeks ago [dechrau Gorffennaf 1873?] many gooseberry bushes in the kitchen garden here were much infested with the caterpillar peculiar to the gooseberry. When the men were not about, and on Sundays, some cuckoos were obaerved every day on the bushes feeding on the caterpillars, which they thinned off coniderably in a week or two. I had them disturbed as little as possible, and sometimes as many as four or five at a time were seen enjoying their least. The cuckoo, from this habit of feeding on caterpillars, have, I think a strong claim to be put on the Schedule of the Birds` Projection Bill. During the season of the gooseberry caterpillar I do not find that any of the small birds do much good in clearing the bushes of them. Perhaps, the song thrush is as useful a bird to the gardener as any, for in the wet summer and autumn of last year it fed on the legion of slugs and snails all the time fruit was scarce. The thrush will have its dessert off the fruit not netted up, but not in the bold daring way of the blackbird, who is the greatest pest of all the small birds, except the bullfinch.

Tuesday, 25 April. At 10 o`clock I started in an April shower to walk to Peterchurch. ...... I went home another way over the hill to Blakemere. A wild storm of hail swept down the valley but I took shelter under a hawthorn bush and the sun still went on shining. When the wild storm and white squall were over I went on up the steep lane between the dripping glancing glittering hedges, till across a dingle which separated it from the lane I saw an old man at work on the cottage garden..... There [in the rich warm Meadows of Blakemere] in a field adorned with the noble pear tree of majestic height and growth in full blossom I found cowslips and the first bluebells and the young ferns uncurling their crozier heads. And the sun shone and the Cuckoo called and the pear tree waved her blossoms and all the sweet flower scents went up in fragrant incense and praise to God, and I gathered cowslips and bluebells and was as happy as a child.... Outside the door [of Hannah Preece`s cottage] on the cottage wall hung the old dry withered Birch and wittan twigs soon to be replaced on May Eve by new boughs to keep the old witch out and counteract her spells during the coming year .

Saturday, 29 April. The day of unceasing hopeless rain. I spent the morning in the village.... After luncheon I walked to the Wye Cliff in heavy rain. ... From Wye Cliff I went on through the ceaseless rain by the Wye-side meadow path to Llowes, passing by the old Barn. As I crossed these meadows I saw a cuckoo flying from tree to tree for the first time this spring. Above Pwlldwrgi the nine great poplar spires shone with a golden light even through the rain, and all the spouts and springs and Pistylls along the Brunant [sic] and Llowes banks were roaring wild and strong.... I passed through the village and went up by Ciluni Dingle sides in search of the upper Noyadd. Up and up I went past Moity and the chapel, the road growing narrower, sleepier and stonier, till at length from a lane it threatened to become a watercourse and the rain growing harder till I seemed to be amongst the clouds ..... I had come a mile out of my way up the steep stony hill in the pouring rain, but I soon dropped down again upon the little wayside sheltered chapel by the dingle brookside and heard the welcome clink of the anvil from the blacksmiths forge at Moity... That too late but M a tribute to stream was swollen by the ceaseless streaming rain to raging read torrent and went roaring down the dingle with the voice of thunder. I never saw the brooks out so quickly or roaring so fast and furious in so short a time....

Thursday, 4 May. Breakfast at 8 with the Archdeacon, train at 9, he to Doldowlod to discover if a Welsh services is needed Llanwrthwl Church (Answer, `No`).... It was a glorious noonday and I was glad I had decided to walk... The trees, and especially the oaks, were not yet fully out in leaf, but the larch groves shone brilliant and the graceful weeping birches which stood about the "banks and braes" had just veiled their slender delicate silvery limbs with their spring robes and fashions of the sweetest freshest tenderest green. The blackthorn was blossoming bright in the hedges, and from the banks a few primroses and blue violets looked at me with a smile of welcome..... The sun shone, and the stillness of mountain and valley was unbroken save by the bleating of the sheep, the rushing of the river and the calling of the cuckoo from the green hillsides

A better day for fishing could not well be expected, but although numbers of trout were rising, they were very hard to catch. Showers of rain fell during the day, and unfortunately the breeze got very light in the afternoon. I killed my best fish in the Burn Bay. Went into dinner [yn Tyn y gornel] at 6.30, the hotel being full. It was very pleasant sitting out afterwards, the cuckoo being in full song. Trout (Talyllyn) 7 (1) 15 oz.

Good Friday.
A nice warm day, but rather misty. wind very changeable from S.S.W. ... early start for Tyn-y-groes, as I intended to visit the Dolmellynlyn Lakes. .. I went onto Llyn Abbi, but the mist became very bad, and it was cold and wet. however I stuck to it as there was a nice breeze on the Lake but I only killed two trout both under 1/2 lb. Kinsey joined me at lunch time, having caught some small ones in the river, and as it was impossible owing to the mist to cross over to Llyn Por??ddaw, I went down to the Camlaw nd we fished down, but the sport was poor, the river being very low and clear. I heard the Cuckoo for the first time this year, and I also saw a pair of summer snipe. Trout 41 Camlaw. Trout 2 Llyn Abbi Two rods.

Friday, June 10, 1881 a cold night was followed by a most threatening looking morning: heavily packed serious looking clouds all packed across the sky, and I feared a wet day, and I am sorry to say my fears were realised, for about 10 o`clock the rain began to patter down, and after an hours downpour, continued to drizzle and rain all day, but the wind went SW and it was infinitely milder.
Not a fish was moving this morning and all around was as still is death – not even a cuckoo breaking the silence: this was a sure sign of rain. I gave up the fishing in disgust, and we had our usual dip in the Lake, and breakfast about 7.30, and we then resumed fishing again, but it was no good before the rain came, and it was infinitely worse afterwards: as there were no flies on the water, not that they were not there, as soon as we discovered olive duns [Baetis spp. ] were clinging to the rocks in profusion; these flies eventually did dribble onto the water, in the afternoon they brought a few fish up,. We took it easy in the morning, but we worked very hard the remainder of the day, but of course night fishing was out of the question in such weather, and wet as we were we did not attempt it. I landed a nice fish 3/4lb nearly opposite our tent on a small quill gnat – much resembling the fly on the water, and I got a fly a shade nearer it afterwards – so did G: and we circumvented a few trout with it. The natural was no doubt a sort of olive dun. I nailed another good fish on the opposite side close to the shore, which was rising greedily to the small dun. There were a fair number of Alders on the water, but the fish did not take kindly to them. The remainder of the day was uneventful and I was not sorry to get into a change of dry clothes, which I quickly did this evening. We found the tent stand the wet very well as long as it was not touched. We built Hide a very comfortable kennel of rock and heather, with a straw bed. The straw we found near the Lake, left there by some former visitors. I had my doubts about Hide staying there, but I am glad to say she slept there all night as quiet as a lamb without disturbing us; it would not have been pleasant to have had her as a fellow companion in the tent, wet and shaggy coated as she was:
